We are delighted to share the outcome of our latest Ofsted inspection, following a visit to our residential care provision earlier this year. In the report the Inspectors noted a nurturing environment, strong leadership and effective safeguarding in a newly published Ofsted inspection report covering its residential provision. Inspectors rated the residential experience as good, with leadership and management judged outstanding.
Inspectors highlighted the “warm and welcoming” atmosphere and the “nurturing” relationships between staff and pupils. One line from the report captures this clearly: “Children are consistently treated with respect and valued as individuals.”
Inspectors found that many children experience a genuine sense of belonging at the school, which is something that, for some, had been missing in previous educational settings. Residential and day pupils mix regularly for meals and activities, helping students build meaningful friendships.
The carefully tailored independence programmes were singled out as a major strength, where students learn essential life skills such as using public transport, managing money, cooking and doing their own laundry.
The wide range of activities was also highlighted in the report with the staff routinely consulting students about their interests to shape evening and weekend plans.
Safeguarding was judged good, with leaders praised for their emphasis on training, accountability, and reflective practice. Staff were found to be confident in identifying concerns, and children know which trusted adults they can approach. It was noted that online safety at NCW is a particular priority, supported by monitoring systems and parental controls on the school’s Wi‑Fi, along with support for student wellbeing.
Leadership and management were rated outstanding, with inspectors praising the impact of the Head of Residential for bringing fresh ideas, energy and a clear focus on improving students’ care experiences. Staff training has also been strengthened, with a strong emphasis on therapeutic and nurturing approaches. It was also reported that parents and professionals offered “overwhelmingly positive” feedback, especially regarding the improvements driven by the Head of Residential.
Rachel Perks, Principal of NCW, is delighted with the inspection findings: “It is wonderful that the Inspectors really captured the strengths of the NCW Residential provision in their report – the care we show to students, the dedication of our staff and the opportunities for the students to thrive here in a safe, nurturing environment”
Overall, the report illustrates that NCW continues to provide a high‑quality residential experience, with outstanding leadership, a nurturing culture and a strong focus on independence.
